Source Code - Definition

The source code represents the readable text of a computer program or website. It is written in a programming language and translated into machine language by a compiler, enabling it to be output as a complete program or website.

The representation varies depending on the programming language, with more extensive programs consisting of several files. Commands, variables, comparisons, loops and comments are recurring building blocks in the program code. The source code includes functions, descriptions, definitions, calls, methods and operational instructions. It enables basic instructions, calculation steps, text display, variable placeholders, comparisons and repeated execution of commands through loops. Comments are used for line commenting and the inclusion of text that has not been taken into account.

The source code thus forms the basis for software development, allows adaptations by experienced users and the development of similar programs. Access to the source code promotes the contribution to the user community through code sharing and reuse.
