Federal Office for Information Security - Definition

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), founded in 1991 and based in Bonn, is a German federal authority attached to the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Homeland. It is the central authority for IT security in Germany.

The BSI supports federal authorities, companies and private individuals in IT security issues, monitors compliance with security standards and legal requirements and develops new security standards and best practices. It conducts its own research projects, certifies IT products and services and issues warnings about security threats. In addition, the BSI offers IT security advice for various target groups and informs the public about IT and internet security issues. Comprehensible IT security guidelines on cyber security can be found here: www.bsi-fuer-buerger.de

The BSI's guiding principle is: "As the federal cyber security authority, the BSI shapes information security in digitalization through prevention, detection and response for the state, economy and society." The BSI therefore plays a key role in ensuring IT security in Germany and makes a significant contribution to the digital sovereignty and security of the IT infrastructure.
