Online UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) - Definition

An online UPS (uninterruptible power supply) also stands for double conversion UPS and is used for server and data communication. It protects electronic devices and computers from power failures, voltage fluctuations and voltage peaks.

This takes the form of constant output voltage through rectifiers, which convert the input voltage to direct current and thus feed the battery. An inverter is then responsible for drawing the current. This is done via the rectifier during normal operation and via the battery during power failures. This transition takes place without any noticeable interruption and offers protection against data loss or damage to the devices.

Online UPS systems offer comprehensive protection for very sensitive devices and applications by generating continuous mains voltage. They also offer a regulated power supply, high mains filter function and have no switchover times or supply gaps. However, online UPS systems are cost-intensive and require cooling for long and good functional performance.
