Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) - Definition

UPS stands for “uninterruptible power supply” and is an important device that stabilizes the electrical power supply of electronic devices and systems and protects them from faults in the power grid. UPS devices ensure the operational continuity and integrity of IT infrastructures.

In the event of power failures and interruptions in the power grid, the UPS is automatically activated by switching to the integrated battery. This ensures the seamless operation of electronic devices without data loss. A UPS consists of one or more battery modules. If the UPS only has one, it is activated continuously. If there are several battery modules, some of the modules are only activated as soon as more load is required. This means that one module is activated and the other is on standby and always ready for use. In this way, the UPS ensures a constant and stable output voltage, regardless of fluctuations in the input power supply. This protects the connected devices from damage caused by voltages that are too high (overvoltage) or too low (undervoltage).

UPS devices are used in hospitals, data centers or other IT facilities where a permanent power supply is a top priority. The use of UPS systems is therefore important to provide protection against data loss, hardware failures or operational interruptions.
