Ethernet - Definition

Ethernet is the most commonly used, wired, local network technology that transmits data between different devices. In such a network, computers, servers and printers are connected to each other via special LAN cables. Ethernet is often equated with LAN.

An Ethernet cable is a very specific type of cable that has prevailed over the other cable types Arcnet and Token Ring. This is because the Ethernet cable is a twisted copper cable that forwards data in a standardized form. This takes place in the form of small portions of data, which are packaged and transported in larger Ethernet packets using Ethernet frames.

Ethernet is used in many environments, e.g. in home networks, small offices or large company networks. It forms the basis for local network communication. Due to its flexibility and scalability, Ethernet has become very important in the IT industry.
