Output Devices - Definition

Output devices are essential for displaying information visually or audibly from a computer system. These hardware components play a central role in user interaction with computers. Monitors are widely used for visual display, while printers output content on paper. Loudspeakers enable the acoustic reproduction of audio content. Examples:

  • Screen/beamer: for transient visible output
  • Printer/plotter: for permanent visible output
  • Loudspeaker/headset: for audible output
  • Braille display (output device for blind people): for tactile output

Choosing the right output device is crucial for an optimal user experience and efficient information processing. The flow of information between users and computers includes the processing of input (by input devices) and output via corresponding devices. A typical process involves sending a signal from an input device, processing it through the computer and sending a new signal to an output device. However, there are different types, including specialized ones such as voice-generating devices and GPS devices. Drivers and plug-in cards play an important role in signal processing for different output devices.
