Hyperlink - Definition

Hyperlinks, also known as links, are the basics of the networked structure of the World Wide Web. They connect websites and consist of a link text and the linked URL. The link text stands out from the normal text in terms of color and underlining. Clicking on the hyperlink opens the linked website in the same or a new tab.

Hyperlinks in digital documents allow users to easily jump between different locations or to other resources. Linking HTML documents enables cross-references between web pages or text documents and graphics. A hyperlink can consist of text or a graphic element and is highlighted or underlined in color. In HTML documents, hyperlinks are implemented by the and elements. The element defines the position in the content area, while defines relationships to other documents in the header area. Attributes such as Target and Title enable customization of hyperlinks.

Hyperlinks can lead internally (internal hyperlinks) or externally (external hyperlinks) to other sources, making it easier to surf the Internet and connecting information between different websites. Despite different contexts and applications, the basic principle of linking information remains the same.
