A gigabyte is a unit of data storage capacity of a medium or the size of a file, which can measure data volumes.
1 GB comprises approx. 1 billion bytes, whereby 1 byte is the smallest data unit. When classifying storage media, kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB) are used to simplify everyday use. One MB corresponds to 1000 KB, whereas 1000 MB correspond to one GB. An MB is therefore significantly smaller than a GB, but much larger than a KB.
The term gigabyte is therefore important in IT, as it describes the storage and transfer capacity of devices and systems.
