In information technology, a byte is defined as the basic unit of measurement for digital information. A byte consists of 8 bits, whereby a bit is the smallest unit of information that can be represented.
Bytes are used to store and transmit data in the form of numbers, letters, symbols and other characters. A byte corresponds to a single character, such as a letter or a number. Bytes are used to store and display texts, videos, images, audio files or program codes in digital devices.
Other storage units such as kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB) are represented by a combination of bytes and are used to measure storage space and data transfer speed.
