PPP stands for “Point-to-Point Protocol” and describes a network protocol that was primarily developed for connecting computers via dial-up lines, such as those used for dial-up connections via the telephone network.
It enables the assignment of IP addresses, the authentication of users and the efficient transfer of data via point-to-point connections. It is particularly useful for establishing connections between a client and an Internet Service Provider (ISP) via modems or other dial-up technologies. This protocol supports various security mechanisms and can also support multiple network protocols simultaneously, including IPv4 and IPv6.
PPP is not as common today as it was in the past, but remains relevant in some contexts. It serves as the basis for newer technologies such as DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and is often used for broadband access.
