Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) - Definition

HTML stands for “Hypertext Markup Language” and is a widely used markup language in web design and easy to learn compared to other programming languages such as JavaScript or PHP. It enables the design of websites, but no creation of algorithms, tasks, conditions or loops due to its lack of command structure.

The current standard uses XHTML and HTML 5 to create search engine-optimized and user-oriented websites. HTML impresses with its platform-independent nature, clear syntax, free open source approach and steep learning curve. Websites are created using standardized HTML tags that describe and structure elements. The HTML source text provides browsers with instructions for the visual presentation of the website, taking CSS into account.

The basic structure of an HTML document consists of a document header with meta information and a document body with the actual content. As a standardized, text-based markup language, HTML consists of simple markup elements, the “tags”, as well as empty elements such as <br>. Elements within start and end tags characterize the structure of the HTML document, starting with the tag and ending with the tag. Different tags in the basic structure of an HTML web page mark important areas.
