ZIP File Format - Definition

ZIP is a lossless compression format that serves as a container for files or directories to save storage space and facilitate data transport. With the .zip extension, they are easily recognizable and are used in companies worldwide.

ZIP enables the fast transfer of multiple files, similar to folders, but with compressed content. The name “ZIP” comes from “zipper” (zipper). They are also relevant for online games and can be created and unpacked using software such as 7-Zip. ZIP supports various packing algorithms, enables encryption and the splitting of archives into several volumes. ZIP differs from 7-ZIP and RAR in its higher compression rates. Lossless compression algorithms such as “Deflate” remove redundant data and preserve the original integrity.

ZIP offers space savings, data protection when sending and efficient file management. ZIP files can be easily created and unpacked using integrated software or third-party applications.
