Kilobyte (KB) - Definition

A kilobyte is a unit of measurement in IT that describes the storage capacity of digital data or the data throughput.

1 kilobyte corresponds to 1024 bytes, whereby 1 byte consists of 8 bits. A bit is the smallest unit of information, which can either have the value 0 or 1. 1000 kilobytes in turn form 1 MB (megabyte). Kilobytes are used to specify the size of files, the data consumption during data transfer or the available working memory.

Although they are a small unit, they were of great importance in the early days of computer technology and data storage.
