Network types: Overview of types and areas of application

A network basically describes a combination of at least two devices. This enables the exchange of data, comprehensive communication and the shared use of storage space, documents or programs, for example.

Networking can be established both wirelessly and wired. However, there are also significant variations possible, which have an impact on range and security, among other things. A wide variety of requirements are met by the network types - from international companies to private home networks.

Find out below what types of networks there are and for which areas of application they are suitable.

Local network types with small to medium range

Personal Area Network (PAN)

This type of network is usually found in private homes. You can use it to connect devices that are within a few meters of each other. The data transfer rate is also low (compared to other network types).

Examples of PAN networks:

  • You connect your smartphone to headphones via Bluetooth.
  • You add a new element to your smart home system via ZigBee.
  • The wired (or wireless) connection between printer and laptop is part of this type of network.
  • You establish a data exchange via USB.

Local Area Networks (LAN)/Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

LAN or WLAN networks are used very frequently and can vary greatly in size. Both two computers in a private household and a large number within an office building can be part of it. This local network has a limited range of up to around 100 meters.

It can be used wirelessly (WLAN), wired (LAN) or in combination. Here too, the choice depends on the specific application - LAN is considered more secure than WLAN.

To create a secure and functional network, you need a combination of different hardware. For example, Ethernet with fiber optic or copper cable, routers and switches are used.

Example of these network types:

  • In a multi-person household, several computers are connected to the same Internet connection.
  • In an open-plan office, all employees can operate the central printer via their computer.

Network types with higher range

Campus Area Networks (CAN)

Such a network is larger than a local network, but more limited than the MAN network described in the next paragraph. As it is limited to one institution, it is a private network that only allows access to authorized persons.

This type of network is often used…

  • at universities to facilitate exchange between the institution, students and lecturers.
  • in the corporate environment in the limited area of the work campus.

Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN)

This type of network connects several LAN networks between locations in metropolitan areas or within a city. In contrast to CAN, this networking is often possible both privately and publicly.

Examples of this network type:

  • City-wide WLAN, which is available to the public free of charge.

Network types with very high range

Wide Area Networks (WAN)

Such a network can extend across several countries and even continents. Good data transmission can take place between different company locations, for example. Fluent video telephony is also guaranteed across these borders.

Examples of this large network:

  • Internet providers make it possible to access the Internet with the help of such networks.
  • Employees at different locations can access a central data center.

Global Area Networks (GAN)

The giant among network types connects several WAN networks with each other - worldwide. The use of fiber optics is supported by international deep-sea cables and satellite connections.

Examples of this global network:

  • Connecting globally active companies with extremely far-flung locations.
  • The World Wide Web.

Other networks that make life easier

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

VPN providers are currently being heavily advertised in conjunction with streaming services. They make it possible to access the service from different countries. The special feature here is that the location and IP address are hidden. However, this additional network type can also be used optimally in the corporate environment or at universities.

Examples of this are:

  • Employees can access the company network from home via VPN without putting sensitive data at risk.
  • Students also have off-campus access to the university network.

Internet of Things (IoT)

The connection between different physical devices (things) via the internet is known as the Internet of Things (IoT). The automated organization makes work processes and data exchange easier for users. Basically, there are countless examples that are in everyday use.

These include, for example:

  • Smartwatches and fitness trackers
  • intelligent fire alarms
  • security systems
  • virtual assistants such as Alexa

Concepts for networking several computers

Two concepts make it possible to establish a connection within a network type:

In a peer-to-peer network (P2P), all participating computers have equal rights and are therefore both senders and receivers. In addition, communication takes place directly from one device to another - i.e. without an intermediate server. Data is therefore organized decentrally without a central point. The setup is quite straightforward and is suitable for private use or in very small businesses.

Examples of this type of network:

  • File sharing applications (e.g. BitTorrent)
  • Instant messaging (e.g. Skype)
  • Groupware (e.g. Microsoft Sharepoint)

In contrast, a client-server network describes the communication between two devices with different roles. These are clearly defined and recorded in corresponding protocols. This is the most commonly used concept in network technology. The exchange takes place via a central server, which makes data available to several authorized end devices (clients). This meets the requirements of large companies, for example.

Examples of a client-server network:
