Blade Server - Definition

Blade servers are a special type of server hardware designed for high density, efficiency and scalability. They are designed to have “blades” in a common housing. These blades are narrow and small servers that fit into bays and are interconnected, which in turn enables high computing power. The bays fit into a housing that can hold up to 8 blades. This housing is placed in a rack in the data center.

This makes it possible to accommodate a large number of servers in one rack. Blades are independent modules that have a memory, CPU and network controller as well as input and output ports. Connecting the blades via fiber optics enables fast data exchange.

Blade servers are particularly popular in large data centers and companies that require a scalable, efficient and easy-to-manage server structure. They can increase computing power and are not only flexible to use, but also cost-effective.
