An era is coming to an end: Support for Windows 10 will end on 14 October 2025. From this date onwards, Microsoft will no longer provide free security or feature updates. However, many users are reluctant to switch to Windows 11, preferring to click ‘Continue using Windows 10’ when the support message appears, or even having to pay for extended security updates (ESU) after support ends in order to extend support. Nevertheless, it is important to upgrade in good time and stay up to date to ensure security.
In this blog post, you will find all the important information about the end of support and what precautions you should take now to stay safe and secure.
End-of-support for hardware or software refers to the point in time when manufacturers discontinue support for devices or programmes. Although these can still be used, there is an increased security risk. The relevant date is usually announced well in advance so that users have enough time to prepare for the changeover, as is the case with Windows 10.
Windows 10 was introduced in 2015 and, after around ten years, is now coming to an end: Microsoft will discontinue support on 14 October 2025. From this point onwards, security updates will no longer be provided, which significantly increases the risk of cyber attacks and other threats. Until now, the paid support extension was reserved exclusively for businesses. However, private users now also have this option. With the Extended Security Updates Programme (ESU), additional security updates can be obtained until 13 October 2026. Support for Windows 10 will end completely by then at the latest.
This means that you can continue to use your device with Windows 10 – it will not become unusable – but it will become increasingly insecure. Newly discovered vulnerabilities will not be fixed. In addition, new software will only be optimised for Windows 11 in the future, which will limit the use of Windows 10 in the long term.
Since upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is recommended, but many users do not do so immediately and may continue to use the support updates provided by the ‘ESU’ programme, we will outline the risks of continued use below.
Increased security risk:
Functional limitations:
No technical support:
As described in the last point, it is possible to extend support through (free) updates until October 2026, provided you have a valid Windows 10 licence. Nevertheless, you should consider updating to Windows 11, as security risks increase after the EOS date. The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) also recommends planning the transition early and switching to Windows 11.
Since not every computer supports an upgrade to Windows 11 (e.g. models from before 2017), you should plan the transition now and consider purchasing a new laptop if necessary. Before switching, it is essential to back up all important data on an external hard drive or in the cloud.
If you want to continue working safely and securely, you should take the following steps:
