Unmanaged switches are network switches that have switching functions but, unlike a managed switch, do not offer any advanced configuration options or management functions. They enable basic communication between the connected devices. This takes place via several Ethernet ports, which automatically recognize the connected devices and forward the data traffic.
There is no major set-up effort as they are easy to operate and work via plug-and-play. They are therefore particularly suitable for less advanced users as they do not require any training or special knowledge. Unmanaged switches are used in networks where there are not many participants and the data traffic is not so high. They are therefore used in LAN (Local Area Network) environments, e.g. in small and medium-sized companies or for home use.
Unmanaged switches are therefore a cost-effective alternative, as they offer fewer functions and hardware for configuration and management, but still function perfectly. Unmanaged switches are particularly suitable when a simple network connection is required for devices in local networks, without the need for network monitoring or prioritization of data traffic. However, in larger and more complex networks, managed switches should be used to meet specific requirements in the areas of quality of service, security and network management.
