Rack Server - Definition

A rack server is a purpose-built server or computer that is designed to be mounted in standardized rack enclosures.

These server cabinets can hold multiple IT devices and can be used in data centers to efficiently organize and manage hardware. This facilitates the installation, maintenance and scalability of servers in data centers. The tasks of a rack server are data processing, storage, virtualization and application support. Rack servers are built in a special form factor, which is measured in height units (HE or rack units). A standard rack is usually 42U high, with 1U being approximately 1.75 inches. Rack servers are designed for high power density and efficiency to save space and energy. They are also positioned to enable efficient cooling and easy accessibility.

Rack servers are used in corporate environments as they offer a cost-effective way of organizing server infrastructures. Their design, which is available in various configurations, makes them easily scalable.
