Personal Area Network (PAN) - Definition

PAN stands for “Personal Area Network” and describes a wireless or wired network that is used to connect digital devices and communication equipment in the immediate vicinity of a person.

It is restricted to a very limited physical area, such as a radius of 10 meters or less. A PAN connects devices such as: Laptops, smartphones, tablets and other wireless peripherals. These networks enable wireless data transfer, data exchange and the sharing of resources between devices. Wifi and Bluetooth are commonly used protocols for implementing a PAN, as it is a simple and cost-effective way to connect devices together.

PANs play an important role in the networking of personal devices and facilitate seamless communication and data exchange between different application areas, from consumer electronics to business communication.
