Offline UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) - Definition

An offline UPS stands for a standby uninterruptible power supply and is used for small consumers, such as individual computers, peripherals or small telephone systems. It protects electronic devices and computers from power failures, voltage fluctuations and voltage peaks.

The offline UPS monitors the status of the power grid and draws power from the mains socket. The emergency power is only activated if the mains power supply becomes unstable or fails. It then automatically switches to battery power. This transition takes place without any noticeable interruption and offers protection against data loss or damage to the devices.

An offline UPS is recommended for the entry-level class as it is cost-effective. It also benefits from a simple design, high efficiency and a long battery life. However, an offline UPS has no mains filter function and the switching time is up to 10 milliseconds. They may not be suitable for very sensitive devices and applications.
