Script - Definition

Scripts are sequences of commands that are executed by software such as web browsers or server applications to automate processes. They play a role in the creation of dynamic websites and configuration tasks. A script is a text document in a special language that is interpreted by the computer.

Unlike compiled programs, scripts are interpreted, which means that source code and execution code are the same. This makes scripts slower compared to compiled programs. Important scripting languages are PHP, Perl, JavaScript, VBScript and Powershell for Windows. You can use scripts in various contexts, for example for macros in Office programs or to automate IT tasks.

Scripts save time, automate recurring tasks and offer support for different operating systems.
