Phishing - Definition

Phishing is a malicious fraudulent technique in the IT world where cybercriminals attempt to steal personal, confidential or financial information from users.

They do this by posing as trustworthy entities. The perpetrators send fake messages, emails or websites that appear to come from legitimate organizations, individuals or companies. The cybercriminals proceed by creating fake communications that look deceptively real. These messages contain misleading information and ask recipients to disclose confidential information such as usernames or passwords.

Phishing is often used to install malware on the victim's device in order to gain direct access to personal data. To protect yourself from phishing, you should not disclose sensitive information to unknown sources and ensure that security software and updates are regularly updated.
