End of support for SonicWall SMA-100: How to ensure a secure migration

The end-of-support (EOS) date for the SonicWall SMA-100 series has been brought forward to 31 October 2025. This means that the security of these devices is particularly important, as vulnerabilities have been discovered in the past that could be exploited by cybercriminals.

To ensure a smooth transition, it is recommended that you switch to an alternative solution and discontinue use of SMA-100 devices if they are still in use. This article provides all the important information you need for a secure transition.

The risks of old VPN appliances

The reason for the earlier end-of-support date lies in SonicWall's responsibility to ensure security for its customers. After testing, SonicWall found that the vulnerabilities of the old SMA-100 devices had recently been increasingly exploited by cybercriminals.

Therefore, the EOS date has been brought forward to 31 October 2025 in order to reduce security risks and enable customers to transition safely to alternative solutions. If you have an old SMA-100 device, SonicWall will help you with the transition. We are available to advise you and answer any questions you may have.

Modern alternatives for your SMA100

SonicWall has already ensured a smooth transition: various migration paths are available to replace your old devices. These are modern remote access solutions that offer security and performance.

  • Cloud Secure Edge (CSE) licences:

With this solution, you receive 24-month licences that cover your current use of SMA-100 appliances. This creates a modern solution with optimal network performance. An additional advantage: CSE supports the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and helps authenticate local Active Directory environments.

  • Firewall SSL VPN user licences:

This solution provides licences for the same number of users as the SMA 100 appliance, covering all users. This ensures secure remote access to company resources for all users.

  • Additionally: Network Security Virtual Firewall:

A firewall that connects your infrastructure to Cloud Secure Edge (CSE) or SSL VPN connections. This creates a seamless solution that protects and monitors data traffic.

Switch over safely and on time

If you use SMA-100 devices in your company, you should switch to one of the proposed solutions before 31 October 2025. This will ensure security in your company and allow you to benefit from modern technology that can continue to be used.

Start the migration via the SMA-100 replacement website from SonicWall. Further details can also be found in the End-of-Support Migration FAQ.

In addition, due to the high security risks associated with old VPN appliances, SMA-100 devices will be deactivated. From this point on, appliances and user connectivity will be lost and support will be discontinued. That is why it is particularly important to switch over in good time.
