Zebra TC51 and charging station: When refurbished hardware is worth it

An extra handheld for the warehouse, a spare device for the branch or additional charging points: anyone who already uses mobile computers will want to integrate such purchases as seamlessly as possible into their day-to-day operations. Refurbished hardware may be a viable option if it is compatible with the existing application and meets the technical requirements for continued use.

This can be illustrated specifically using two products: the Zebra TC51 and the CRD-TC51-5SC4BC-01 charging station. For the system to work, the device, application and charging accessories must be compatible.

Continuing to use existing technology

IT remarketing involves the refurbishment and resale of second-hand IT hardware. At IT-Planet, this includes testing the devices, cleaning them and carrying out any necessary repairs. The term ‘refurbished’ or ‘fully reconditioned’ describes the condition of the refurbished equipment.

For companies with an existing fleet of TC51 devices, adding suitable additional units may make good organisational sense. An application that has already been set up can, where appropriate, continue to be used; staff are familiar with how to operate it, and existing accessories can remain in use. The prerequisite is that the specific device model actually fits into this environment.

It is also worth considering refurbished hardware from a price perspective: it is often cheaper than comparable new equipment. At IT-Planet, we also offer a three-year warranty on refurbished items, compared to two years for new equipment.

The Zebra TC51 as an addition to the fleet

The TC510K-1PAZU4P-A6 is a mobile Android computer with an integrated barcode scanner. Its features include a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels, 4 GB of RAM, as well as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC.

This enables the device to combine barcode scanning with the operation of an application directly at the point of use. One possible workflow is, for example, stock-taking: scan an item, retrieve information from the stock management system and record a quantity.

The TC51’s replaceable battery is particularly practical for day-to-day work. If required, a charged spare battery can be inserted whilst the removed battery is charged separately. This is useful, for example, in shift work where several staff members use the same device in succession. With the appropriate charging station, devices and spare batteries can be charged at a fixed location and prepared for the next shift.

Four devices and four spare batteries on a single charging station

The CRD-TC51-5SC4BC-01 is a charging unit for up to four compatible mobile computers and four spare batteries. It is part of the ShareCradle range and is designed exclusively for charging.

It can be used to set up a dedicated return and charging point for a shared fleet of devices. Whilst the handhelds are in use, suitable spare batteries can be charged. After use, the devices are returned to the same location. Whether this arrangement fits in with your own shift planning depends on the number of devices and the number of battery changes required.

When purchasing via IT remarketing, the scope of delivery should be explicitly specified. The power supply unit, DC cable and suitable mains cable must be ordered separately.

Making sensible use of existing hardware

Existing hardware already contains manufactured components. If suitable devices continue to be used after refurbishment, these components remain in service for longer. If a refurbished device replaces a new purchase, this can reduce the need for additional new hardware.

The Federal Environment Agency generally recommends using information technology for as long as possible. This principle also applies to accessories. A functional, compatible charging station can continue to be used as long as it meets operational requirements.

Zebra Technologies and IT-Planet

The TC51 is an example from the field of mobile data capture. Zebra Technologies’ portfolio also includes barcode scanners, label printers, mobile computers and terminals. Accessories and licences complement the hardware.
