Wide Area Network (WAN) - Definition

WAN, also known as “Wide Area Network”, represents a comprehensive computer network that establishes the connection between groups of computers over long distances.

It is characterized by its ability to cover a considerable geographical area and is not limited to a local area. Transmission protocols and address concepts enable data to be transmitted. WANs are widely used in large companies, where they connect office networks with each other. Each office has its own local network or LAN (Local Area Network), which are connected via WANs. These long connections can be established via IP tunnels or VPNs (Virtual Private Network).

WANs therefore play a major role in networking company locations, providing Internet access for end users and supporting telecommunications services. They are of great importance for global communication and data exchange in modern IT infrastructures.
