The session layer forms the fifth layer/Layer 5 in the OSI model, the standardized reference model for structuring network communication.
The main tasks of the session layer are to organize, manage, set up and terminate the connections between different devices in a network. This is done with the help of control and monitoring mechanisms. It provides services such as data exchange, dialogue control and synchronization between applications. The layer thus enables sessions to be opened, maintained and closed, ensuring efficient communication between applications.
The session layer uses application protocols such as SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) or FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Layer 5 in the OSI model therefore helps to organize and coordinate communication in a network.
