Router - Definition

A router is a network device that is used to control and forward data traffic in networks and various computers. It works on layer 3 of the OSI model and enables communication between devices in different IP networks.

This is done by forwarding the data packets to the correct destination. A router uses routing tables and network information to determine the best path for the data packets and to transfer them efficiently from one network segment to another. Routers are equipped with multiple network connections and are used in home networks or corporate networks. They can also provide security functions such as: Firewall filtering or network address translation to protect networks from unwanted access.

Routers are an important part of networks because they enable communication and data exchange between devices in different networks. Routers are available in various configurations, e.g: Home routers for private use or corporate routers for managing networks in large organizations.
