Presentation Layer/Layer 6 - Definition

The presentation layer forms the sixth layer in the OSI model, the standardized reference model for structuring network communication.

This layer is responsible for the conversion, coding and encryption of system-dependent data. This ensures that different systems can communicate with each other, regardless of their internal data representation. The main tasks of this layer include data compression and conversion of data formats.

This layer therefore facilitates connectivity between different systems by ensuring that data can be interpreted correctly.
