IP Address - Definition

The “IP” in IP address stands for “Internet Protocol” and describes an individual address that makes the devices in a local network addressable and accessible. The IP address can be assigned not only to a single recipient, but also to a group of recipients.

IP addresses can be used to distinguish between different computers, websites and routers, which makes it possible for the Internet to function. Communication between devices is ensured by IP addresses, as they are used in data transport between sender and recipient.

The IP address is an arbitrary sequence of numbers created and assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). It is a separate string of characters separated by dots in groups of four. This string consists of numbers that can be between 0 and 255.
