Global Area Network (GAN) - Definition

GAN stands for “Global Area Network” and is the largest of the common network types: MAN, CAN, WAN, LAN and VPN. GAN is a global computer network that is geographically distributed. It enables data exchange and communication between users at different locations around the world.

An example of such a broad network is the World Wide Web. Users can access data, resources and applications from different locations. The GAN is a mixture of wide area networks (WAN) and local area networks (LAN) that uses satellite transmission or the fiber optic structure of wide area networks.

Global area networks are mainly used for business collaboration, telephone conferences or online games. However, GANs can also be used to share large files or access remote databases. GANs offer many advantages, as they are very flexible and enable scalability and cost savings.
