Driver - Definition

Drivers are crucial software components that enable communication between hardware and software in a computer. A driver acts as an intermediary that translates data or commands between the physical hardware, such as printers, and the virtual software.

They enable the customization of control for different devices and play a key role in providing hardware-related functions. The different types of drivers, such as function drivers and filter drivers, work together to process I/O requests. Problems can occur when new software, updates or hardware are added, so regular driver updates are recommended.

The operating system defines how devices should be addressed, and the drivers translate these requests into device-specific control signals. The variety of drivers is crucial to ensure the seamless integration of new devices.
