Development Operations (DevOps) - Definition

DevOps is made up of the terms “Development” (Dev) and “Operations” (Ops) and combines culture, practices and tools for the automation and integration of software development and IT teams. Born out of concerns about the separation of developers and operations teams in the traditional model, DevOps encourages collaboration for faster, more reliable software delivery.

The basic idea of DevOps is the integration of development and operations across the software lifecycle. Companies use it to promote customer satisfaction, continuous improvement and innovation. The underlying infrastructure supports DevOps while tools are used at different stages of the lifecycle. Frequent, smaller updates and Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) improve software delivery. DevOps methodologies such as Scrum, Kanban and Agile play a role, as do tools at each stage.

The benefits include faster deployment, rapid problem resolution, greater scalability, more stable operating environments, more efficient use of resources, automation, insight into system outcomes and increased opportunities for innovation.
