Central Processing Unit (CPU) - Definition

CPU stands for “Central Processing Unit” and describes the most important central processing unit of a computer. It is also known as the main processor and executes the majority of computer commands, which is why a PC would not function without a CPU.

An important function of a CPU is to control the sequence of commands and data. This includes arithmetic and logical operations. These instructions are then forwarded to other units. A CPU supports multitasking by switching back and forth between different tasks and programs.

The CPU is located on a socket, which is mounted on the mainboard. It can happen that the CPU heats up very strongly, which is why cooling with a fan is advisable.
