CAN stands for “Campus Area Network” and is a network in a limited geographical area, e.g. a company site or a hospital complex, which consists of several interconnected local area networks (LAN). It extends up to 5 km and is therefore smaller than a Wide Area Network (WAN) and a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).
A CAN enables users to communicate and exchange data and resources easily. This is done by connecting different buildings or areas with other systems in the network. A CAN benefits from high speed, as the data transmission speed in the network is uninterrupted and higher than the internet speed. In addition, a CAN has more security as it is maintained and managed from one place.
CANs are widely used for efficient collaboration and data exchange as they provide control and security over a network.
