Adware - Definition

Adware stands for “advertising malware” and refers to ad-financed software that aims to generate revenue for its developers through unwanted clicks on advertising. It often reaches devices via drive-by downloads, exploits vulnerabilities in browsers or disguises itself in free applications.

Adware can affect various devices and shows itself through signs such as slow browsers or increased data consumption. Some types, classified as spyware, even record keystrokes to display targeted advertising. Adware can appear on computers and mobile devices. Protection requires regular checks, caution when downloading, avoiding dodgy links and browsing trusted websites. Watch out for signs such as unexpected startup pages, incorrectly displayed websites, excessive pop-ups, slow device performance and other indications of an adware infection.

Preventative measures include regular software updates, being careful when browsing, paying attention to details and downloading from trusted sources.
