Juniper Networks: End of Life and End of Service Products

Have you ever wondered what happens when network technology reaches the end of its lifecycle? At Juniper Networks, this is an important point - because even leading products go through their End of Life (EOL) and End of Service (EOS) phases.

But don't worry: in this article we explain what this means for you and how you can react in good time without losing touch.

Juniper Networks and its importance in network technology

Juniper Networks, founded in 1996 by Pradeep Sindhu, Dennis Ferguson and Bjorn Liencres, is a relatively young but leading provider of networking equipment. With the launch of its first product, the M40 router, in 1998 and a rapid IPO in 1999, the company quickly established itself. Just four years after its foundation, Juniper achieved a market share of 33.5% and positioned itself as the second largest supplier of network equipment worldwide.

Juniper offers a wide range of network devices, including switches, routers, firewalls, transceivers and wireless access points. The company has become particularly important in the high-performance router segment, taking market share from Cisco. Juniper aims to deliver more efficient results to network teams and optimize the user experience. A particular focus is on innovative software such as Junos and Juniper Mist AI.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) plans to acquire Juniper for 14 billion US dollars, with closing in 2024 or early 2025. More information about this merger can be found in our blog post “HPE acquires Juniper for 14 billion US dollars”.

Special features of Juniper products

  • Use of the latest technologies

What does EOL (End of Life) and EOS (End of Service) mean for Juniper products?

End of Life (EOL)

The term “End of Life” describes the status of products when their series production is discontinued and they are no longer available. This applies to both hardware and software. Manufacturers announce EOL phases in advance to make it easier for users to transition to newer solutions, while support is usually still offered. Products that have reached EOL will no longer receive updates or security enhancements, which can lead to potential security risks. Users should therefore plan to upgrade or replace the product in good time to ensure uninterrupted use.

End of Service/ End of Support (EOS)

The term “End of Service” refers to the point at which the manufacturer no longer provides technical support for a product, including updates and bug fixes. Although the devices can still be used, security risks arise, so the user is responsible for maintenance and security. In this context, the sale of the product (EOL) is discontinued first and then maintenance is terminated.

You can find more information about the difference between EOL and EOS in our blog post “EOL vs. EOS: What is the difference and why is it important?”.

EOL and EOS solutions for powerful networks

Below you will find a selection of Juniper products from various series, including switches, routers and firewalls, which are in EOL status. In this overview you can see all Juniper products affected by EOL/EOS.

We also show you the corresponding successor models. These devices can still be used. However, you will notice that some successor models are also in EOL status. You should therefore be careful and upgrade to newer models in good time to ensure the security of your infrastructure. You can find more information on upgrading your infrastructure in our blog post “Build IT infrastructure and benefit from improved processes”.

Advantages of switching to new Juniper products in good time

  • Security: New products offer better protection through regular updates, while EOL devices are more vulnerable to threats.
  • Performance: The latest hardware is faster and more efficient, supports 5G and cloud services and thus ensures a high-performance infrastructure.
  • Save costs: Older devices incur higher costs due to increasing maintenance and repairs; timely upgrades save money and prevent downtime.
  • Future-proof: Newer products are scalable and always keep your network up to date.
