Random Access Memory (RAM) - Definition

RAM stands for “Random Access Memory” and describes a crucial component in computers and other electronic devices.

It refers to the type of memory that temporarily and quickly stores data that can be accessed. This data can be accessed, for example, by the CPU or other components of a computer. RAM is characterized by its speed and random access to data. The data stored in RAM is only retained as long as the device is switched on or until it is no longer required by the CPU or a program. The data is lost when the device is restarted or switched off. The size of the RAM memory influences the performance of a device.

RAM is often offered as an upgrade option to increase the performance of computers, especially for applications such as video editing, gaming and virtualization. RAM is available in different capacities and speeds. The more RAM a computer has, the better its responsiveness and multitasking ability.
